A new report indicates that Ghana's international reserves reached $11.9 billion by the end of 2025, despite the central bank incurring a significant loss of 22 billion cedis. This loss stemmed from a government program aimed at purchasing gold from local miners to enhance reserves. Although the program led to substantial losses, it successfully increased the reserves by $3.9 billion. The high costs associated with the gold acquisition program negatively impacted the central bank's financial situation, prompting a transfer of responsibility for gold purchases to GoldBod, the newly established agency. This shift aims to ensure transparency in budgeting and bolster the country's gold reserves.
