The wildfire in southwestern France, which affected around 42,000 hectares, has been officially declared extinguished after nearly two months. It is the largest fire recorded in the country since 1949, prompting the evacuation of approximately 224,000 people. The fire began in July near Saumos in the Gironde department and threatened both the Cap-Ferret tourist peninsula and areas near Bordeaux. Despite the scale of the fire and the large number of evacuations, no casualties were reported. Over 3,300 firefighters were involved in the response, marking one of the largest mobilizations in modern French civil protection history. This summer's fire is part of a broader trend, with wildfires in France destroying about 98,000 hectares in 2022, the highest since 1976.
