The new road tax law in Romania, effective this fall, introduces ecological criteria for cars, a per-kilometer charge for transporters, and eliminates traditional bridge tolls. For vehicles under 3.5 tons, the rovinieta remains mandatory but is calculated based on vehicle type, usage duration, and Euro pollution standard. Older cars or those lacking emission data will be classified as Euro 0, incurring maximum fees. Various rovinieta durations are available, with prices capped by law and adjusted annually for inflation. Fines for driving without a valid rovinieta range from double to quadruple the annual fee. The old bridge tolls will be abolished by October 2026, and unused tolls can be refunded by CNAIR. Vintage vehicles will no longer be exempt from rovinieta and toll fees.
