Despite increased firefighting capacity, progress in reducing fire risks has been slow. The European Forest Fire Information System reported over 1,400 wildfires this year, burning nearly 435,000 hectares. Meteorologists warn of ongoing extreme conditions in several countries. The EU's response this summer is the most extensive to date, but on-ground intervention remains a national responsibility.
