Italy's largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, was defrauded of €95 million using AI by scammers impersonating executives. Over half of the funds have been recovered, but €36 million remains missing. The fraud began when the president of Fideuram received a WhatsApp message that appeared to be from the bank's CEO, requesting urgent assistance for a foreign transaction. Scammers used AI to mimic the voice of a high-ranking lawyer to further convince the bank's officials. Authorities in multiple countries helped recover €53 million, but the remaining funds were lost in a network of foreign accounts and converted to cryptocurrencies. Investigations are ongoing, but no bank officials are under scrutiny.
