Researchers at Purdue University have developed an 'ultra-white' paint that reflects 98.1% of sunlight, naturally cooling buildings even in direct sunlight. This innovation could significantly lower energy consumption for air conditioning. The paint's effectiveness comes from its ability to reflect nearly all solar energy, outperforming traditional white paints. Tests showed that surfaces coated with this paint remained cooler than the surrounding air, achieving a temperature difference of up to 10.5 degrees Celsius at night. The paint, made primarily from barium sulfate, has been in development for six years and can be produced using existing technologies. It offers a potential solution for reducing energy use in hot climates, although it may not completely replace air conditioning in extreme conditions.
