This decision followed Italy's refusal to lift its own checks on travelers from Spain amid a migration crisis. The Spanish Interior Ministry reported 199 individuals were checked at various airports. These controls will remain in place until September 7, as Italy suspended Schengen agreements with Spain due to a surge in migration. Italy clarified that the checks target non-EU citizens arriving from Spain, while EU citizens are exempt. The Italian Foreign Minister expressed hope for a quick lifting of the suspension once risks diminish.
