A series of unusual earthquakes in Târgu Jiu, starting in February 2023, revealed the reactivation of ancient tectonic structures in a previously low-seismicity area. A study by Romanian researchers indicates that the main quakes occurred at about 20 kilometers deep, followed by over 4,400 aftershocks, providing valuable data on rupture propagation. The region, historically classified as having low seismic activity, experienced significant seismic events, including a Mw 5.4 quake. The research suggests that the rupture propagated mainly in one direction along a system of normal faults. Although the earthquakes were moderate, the findings highlight the complexity of seismic mechanisms and the potential for reactivation of old faults even in low-activity regions. The study does not predict future strong earthquakes in Gorj but emphasizes the need for detailed analysis of seismic sources.
