Oxford Economics has released the Global Cities Index for 2026, ranking 1,000 major cities worldwide. Bucharest ranks 214th and Iași 486th among these cities. The index evaluates cities based on economic power, human capital, quality of life, environmental quality, and governance. New York, London, and Paris lead the rankings, with U.S. cities excelling in economic strength and human capital, while European cities perform better in quality of life and governance. Madrid and Barcelona are the top cities in Spain, facing challenges in housing affordability due to rising demand. The report also highlights the rise of cities in Central and Eastern Europe, with Warsaw making significant gains. In Latin America, Buenos Aires ranks 138th, while several Asian cities are expected to gain importance in the future.
