CCR explică de ce a respins cota de 40% pentru sportivii români

The Romanian Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional a law mandating that at least 40% of players in team sports be Romanian citizens. The court found this requirement discriminatory based on citizenship and a barrier to the free movement of workers within the EU. The law was challenged by the Romanian President, and the court's reasoning emphasized that such quotas violate EU principles regarding labor rights. The court noted that professional athletes are considered workers under EU law, and the law's intent to promote local talent does not justify the discrimination. The court suggested that objective selection criteria could better achieve the intended goals without infringing on workers' rights.
