The ECDC reports a rise in cases, particularly in France, Germany, Sweden, and the UK. While the general risk remains low, the growing resistance threatens treatment options. The main treatments, ceftriaxone and azithromycin, are becoming less effective. Southeast Asian countries are major sources of resistant strains, which have caused treatment failures in Europe and North America. Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to severe complications if untreated. The ECDC noted a 303% increase in notification rates over the past decade, with 106,331 confirmed cases in 2024, the highest since monitoring began in 2009.
