The Venice Commission has been asked to provide an opinion on the transitional provisions of Law no. 180/2026, which may lead to the automatic termination of local mandates, including that of Dominic Fritz in Timișoara. Gunn Marit Helgesen, president of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, raised concerns about the potential retroactive effects of the law, which could undermine democratic representation. The issue has also attracted attention from the European Commission, as it relates to integrity standards and the ongoing PNRR payment requests. The Constitutional Court of Romania previously deemed the law constitutional, but political tensions have arisen between parties regarding the implications for Fritz's situation.
