The National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives (CNSAS) released documents detailing Romanian emigration to West Germany during the late communist era. Between 1987 and 1989, over 47,000 Romanians applied to emigrate, with the regime approving around 35,000 departures. Many sought illegal ways to leave, with 5,536 successfully escaping by refusing to return from trips. The documents highlight the bureaucratic challenges faced, particularly in Sibiu, which had the highest number of blocked applications. Notable cases include members of the band Phoenix, who escaped in 1977. The release sheds light on the desperate measures taken by Romanians to flee the oppressive regime.
