The Department of State Security (DSS) had 14,629 employees at the end of the communist regime, according to data released by the National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives (CNSAS). The figures, derived from documents dated September 1988, reveal the scale of the surveillance apparatus. Of the total, 6,023 worked in the central apparatus in Bucharest, while 2,737 were part of the Security Troops. The territorial apparatus included 5,869 personnel. The data also highlights the gender structure, with 2,297 women making up 15.7% of the workforce, and only 22 women in leadership roles. The documents provide insights into the mechanisms of surveillance employed by the communist regime.
