In the summer of 2026, foreign tourists significantly increased their spending in Romania, with card payments rising sharply. The total value of transactions processed with foreign cards in July and August was 63% higher than in 2025, nearing 250 million lei. British cardholders led in total spending, while Irish cards had the highest average transaction value. The number of foreign tourists also grew, with a 20.4% increase in arrivals compared to July 2025. Notably, payments from Ukrainian cards surged by over 150%. Bucharest topped the list for transaction values, with significant increases also seen in Constanța, Timișoara, and Brașov. Overall, the trend indicates a strong shift towards digital payments in Romania.
