The electronic identity card (CEI) is a new identification document for Romanian citizens, featuring a chip that stores personal data. It can be used for travel within the EU and for accessing digital services. Citizens can apply for CEI at any time, even if their current ID is still valid. The first CEI is free for those over 14, while a fee applies in certain cases. A simpler ID without a chip is also available for those over 14, but it cannot be used for travel. Fees can be paid at designated banks or terminals, and appointments are free.
