A study by the Romanian Police's Institute for Crime Research and Prevention reveals the profile of online fraud victims related to investments in stocks and cryptocurrencies. In the first half of this year, urban residents, particularly those aged 46 to 75, were most affected, with a significant number being retirees or employed individuals. The method of operation has shifted from installing malicious apps to directly requesting money. Victims often had at most a high school education, and the total financial losses exceeded 58 million lei, 2 million euros, and nearly 6 million dollars. The study analyzed 1,252 reports of online fraud from January to June 2026, aiming to outline victim profiles and trends in fraudulent activities.
