The oldest musical instrument found in Romania is a primitive flute made from a shell, dating back around 7,000 years. Discovered in Tărtăria, Alba County, this artifact was part of systematic research in 2018. The flute, made from a sedimentary rock, features four holes and was likely used in a vertical position. It is believed to have been crafted from a local oyster shell, indicating the skill of its maker. The instrument could produce up to 12 different sounds and may have had a ritualistic role in prehistoric communities, suggesting it was associated with a privileged class.
