The use of coal has decreased steadily since 1990, when it represented over a third of total production. By 2025, coal sources like lignite and hard coal ranked lower in energy production compared to nuclear, natural gas, and renewables. The consumption of coal reached historic lows, with some EU countries, like Portugal and Slovakia, phasing out coal use entirely.
