In 2025, coal's share in EU electricity production fell to a record low of 9.2%, with lignite and hard coal also declining significantly. This marks a continued trend of decreasing coal reliance since 1990, when it accounted for over a third of electricity production. By 2025, coal was surpassed by nuclear, natural gas, and renewable sources. The consumption of hard coal and lignite reached historic lows, with only eight EU countries still producing lignite. Several member states have completely phased out coal use for electricity generation.
