In Romania, winter tires are mandatory when driving on roads covered with snow, ice, or slush, regardless of the season. The law does not specify a date for changing tires; the requirement arises only under specific road conditions. Vehicles over 3.5 tons and those with more than nine seats have additional regulations. All-season tires must be marked with M+S or similar to be compliant. Failing to use winter tires can result in fines and the retention of vehicle registration. Starting July 2026, fines will range from 1,946.25 to 4,325 lei for violations.
