Romania may receive another tranche from the 16.7 billion euros allocated through the European SAFE program in early 2027, contingent on project implementation reports. The European Commission clarified that payments will depend on progress made by Romanian authorities, and funds will not be automatically transferred. Romania has one of the largest allocations under SAFE, which totals 150 billion euros for enhancing member states' defense capabilities. The first tranche of approximately 2.5 billion euros was transferred on August 26, 2026, representing 15% pre-financing. Future payments will be linked to the successful execution of defense projects, with progress reports expected biannually. Romania's SAFE program includes 35 projects worth 16.68 billion euros, focusing on military equipment, public order, and civil protection, as well as dual-use infrastructure.
