Historical context shows that the idea for the canal dates back to the 1880s, but it was only officially initiated in 1984. Reports from 1988 and 1989 indicate a complete operational breakdown, with workers living in deplorable conditions and facing food shortages. The project ultimately exemplified the failures of communist planning and execution.
