The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes have fostered a sustainable tourism ecosystem in Spain for over 30 years. In Romania, historical research indicates that pilgrims also traveled through the country towards Santiago. The Friends of "Camino de Santiago" Association has marked over 600 kilometers of routes, but further coordination is needed for sustainable development and integration into the European Camino network. In 2026, Romania and Spain will celebrate 145 years of diplomatic relations, with an event focusing on the Camino's cultural and developmental potential in Romania. Representatives from various institutions gathered to explore opportunities for future development of the pilgrimage routes.
