On September 26, the Romanian Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Voivode Neagoe Basarab, canonized in 2008. His origins are somewhat unclear, but he is linked to the Craiovești family through his mother. After ascending to the throne, Neagoe faced challenges regarding his legitimacy, particularly from Vlad the Young, who sought to eliminate potential rivals. With the support of the Craiovești, Neagoe eventually claimed his rightful place as ruler. His upbringing in a devout environment, particularly at the Bistrița Monastery, shaped his character and faith. Neagoe's relationship with Saint Hierarch Nifon was significant, as he supported Nifon during his exile. After consolidating his power, Neagoe brought Nifon's relics back to Romania, seeking reconciliation with the late ruler Radu the Great, demonstrating his commitment to the church and his people.
