The scheduled shutdown of Unit 6 at Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power plant increases pressure on Romania's energy system, especially during peak evening consumption. The shutdown, which begins on October 8, 2026, for annual maintenance and refueling, will reduce available production by approximately 1,000 MW. This situation complicates Romania's energy balance, as domestic production may not meet rising evening demand. The president of the Intelligent Energy Association, Dumitru Chisăliţă, warns that Romania may need to import up to 2,700 MW during peak hours, especially if regional demand is high. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining reserves for unexpected outages and highlights the potential for increased electricity prices during peak times due to reduced regional production.
