Bulgaria has emerged as a leader in energy storage in Europe, driven by solar energy expansion and significant EU funding. The country now stores more electricity than any other EU member, despite political instability. Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov has been pivotal in this growth, inaugurating a major battery storage unit. Installed storage capacity has surged from 200 MWh to nearly 4,800 MW in two years. The government has initiated numerous projects to enhance storage capabilities, supported by private investments. However, rapid expansion poses risks, including potential market congestion and reliance on expiring subsidies.
