Bulgaria has emerged as a leader in energy storage in Europe, driven by solar energy expansion and significant EU funding. The country now stores a larger share of its electricity production than any other EU member, while neighboring countries increasingly rely on imports. Despite political instability, Bulgaria has modernized its electricity system, achieving a storage capacity of 4,800 MW by mid-2026. The government has initiated numerous storage projects, supported by private investments. The rapid growth of solar energy has highlighted the need for storage solutions, as excess production often goes to waste. However, the expansion poses risks, including potential market congestion and dependency on expiring subsidies.
