Between July 24 and October 1, 2026, up to eight KC-135 tankers and 250 U.S. personnel will be stationed there. The decision followed a request from the U.S. under a defense cooperation agreement. Prime Minister Rumen Radev emphasized that the aircraft will only conduct logistical missions. Opposition parties expressed concerns about security risks, while local mayors and residents threatened protests against the military presence. Iran warned Bulgaria against complicity in U.S. military actions.
