Severe drought in Eastern Europe has impacted energy production, but Bulgaria's investment in large-scale battery storage systems has proven beneficial. With around 100 energy storage systems installed, Bulgaria has been able to export significant amounts of energy despite low water levels affecting nuclear and hydro plants. In July and August, net exports reached approximately 830 GWh per month, with Romania being a major buyer. Bulgaria's battery capacity is about 5.7 GW, representing nearly a quarter of its total production capacity. Meanwhile, Romania is rapidly increasing its storage capacity, but still lags behind Bulgaria, with over 140 projects in development to enhance its solar energy production.
