Bulgaria has approved the deployment of US KC-135 tanker aircraft at Bezmer Air Base to support operations in the Middle East, despite Iranian warnings. The Bulgarian Parliament's decision allows for up to eight aircraft and 250 US military personnel to operate from July 24, 2023, to October 1, 2026. Iran has threatened that bases hosting these aircraft would be considered legitimate targets. The deployment enhances US operational reach in Southeast Europe and strengthens NATO's logistical role. Bulgarian officials emphasized that no combat operations would occur from Bulgarian territory, and the deployment is strictly for aerial refueling support.
