Public transport costs have risen in 14 European capitals over the past three years, with Bucharest seeing at least a 10% increase. A Greenpeace study analyzed transport accessibility and pricing across 27 EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, and Norway. London has the highest monthly fare at €162, followed by Amsterdam and Paris. Nicosia experienced the largest price hike at 67%, while Bucharest is among cities with significant long-term fare increases. The study also highlights VAT rates on public transport tickets, averaging around 11% in the EU. However, some capitals, like Dublin, have seen fare reductions. Only eight of the 30 analyzed countries offer free or affordable public transport options, with Tallinn, Luxembourg, and Valletta ranking highest in accessibility and inclusivity.
