Bucharest metro could shut down in September over unpaid compensation, trade union warns

The Bucharest metro may cease operations in September 2026 if the Transport Ministry does not pay required compensation, according to the Metro Free Union. The union criticized Minister Radu Miruta for promoting misleading narratives about Metrorex's financial situation. They highlighted that the ministry's delayed payments have led to significant debts, with a projected shortfall of RON 450 million in 2026. The union dismissed proposals to transfer metro management to the Bucharest City Hall as unrealistic, citing its financial struggles. They urged the minister to stop spreading misinformation and emphasized the metro's importance for daily commuters. Meanwhile, Miruta acknowledged Metrorex's unpaid electricity bills but stated negotiations for payment plans are ongoing, while Metrorex claims to be addressing its debts.
