Recent research reveals that gold production begins deep beneath the ocean at submarine volcanoes, where mantle melting releases precious metal into magma. This study, led by marine geologist Christian Timm, explains why certain volcanic arcs are rich in gold. The team analyzed volcanic glass samples from the Kermadec arc and Havre Trough, finding that mantle melting in the presence of water is crucial for gold enrichment. The findings indicate that intense melting conditions allow gold to be released from sulfide minerals into ascending magma. This research enhances the understanding of how rich gold deposits form in submarine volcanic arcs, starting the gold cycle long before magma reaches the surface.
