In the first eight months of 2026, Romania's consolidated budget deficit decreased to 59.42 billion lei, down from 86.36 billion lei in the same period of 2025. This represents a nominal reduction of about 31%. Budget revenues rose by 11.4%, while total expenditures increased by 4.2%. The fiscal consolidation process continues, with revenues growing faster than expenditures. The Minister of Finance emphasized the need for prudent spending and prioritization of essential investments. Total revenues reached 468.10 billion lei, with significant contributions from VAT and social security contributions. Expenditures totaled 527.53 billion lei, with a notable increase in interest payments, highlighting ongoing budgetary pressures. Investments funded by EU sources saw a significant rise, indicating a focus on development projects.
