Nuclearelectrica has announced the controlled shutdown of its second reactor at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant due to low Danube water levels, following the earlier shutdown of the first reactor. This unprecedented situation is attributed to severe drought conditions affecting the river's water supply, which is crucial for cooling the reactors. The company, which generates 18-20% of Romania's electricity, anticipates increased energy imports as a result. The last similar incident occurred in August 2003, when the first unit was disconnected due to low water levels. Nuclearelectrica is continuously monitoring the situation and will communicate when the reactors can be reconnected to the national grid.
