Roxana Mînzatu, Vice President of the European Commission, announced the launch of the European Literacy Coalition, urging Romanian schools and organizations to participate. The initiative responds to alarming PISA 2025 results showing that one in three EU youths struggles with basic reading comprehension. The coalition aims to enhance literacy through targeted support for educators, collaboration between schools and libraries, and improving critical information evaluation skills among students and adults. Mînzatu emphasized the need for basic competencies in the context of rapid AI advancements. The PISA report indicates Romanian students scored below the OECD average in Mathematics, Reading, and Science, with a notable decline in reading proficiency.
