A traditional cheese from Bistrița-Năsăud, known as "Brânza frământată de Teaca," has been officially registered by the European Commission as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This cheese is made from raw cow's milk and is uniquely packed in pig bladders. The cheese is oval or irregularly round, weighing between 0.4 to 2 kg, and is known for its specific production methods passed down through generations. The European Commission emphasizes that the product's characteristics are closely tied to the local cultural and geographical context, making it unique to the region. This addition brings the total number of protected names in the EU to over 3,900.
