Researchers have found that high blood pressure may accelerate cartilage degradation in osteoarthritis, linking hypertension to joint health. A study from Chonnam National University analyzed data from over 36,000 individuals, revealing a stronger connection between hypertension and osteoarthritis in those with severe knee injuries. Experiments on hypertensive mice showed that high blood pressure led to increased cartilage loss, particularly in already vulnerable joints. The mechanism involves vasopressin and its receptor AVPR1A, which, when activated, promotes cartilage breakdown. Blocking this pathway in mice reduced cartilage degradation, suggesting potential treatment targets for those with both hypertension and osteoarthritis. Further research is needed to confirm these findings in humans.
