BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu: Romania currently meets none of criteria for adopting euro, BNR is ready to resume the process

The National Bank of Romania is prepared to restart euro adoption discussions, but currently does not meet any criteria for the transition, according to Governor Mugur Isarescu. He emphasized that adopting the euro is a complex political and social process, not just a currency exchange. Romania's commitment to adopting the euro is outlined in its EU accession treaty, but significant fiscal corrections are needed before proceeding. Isarescu noted that Romania must maintain macroeconomic stability and remain in the exchange rate mechanism for at least two years after meeting the criteria, but he could not provide a timeline for the euro switch.
