The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development warns that attacks on ships in the Black Sea and low water levels in the Danube are severely hindering grain exports, causing a significant price increase. The report highlights economic vulnerabilities in the region, particularly due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has disrupted maritime traffic and reduced the number of ships passing through the Bosporus. Ukraine and Russia account for a quarter of global wheat exports, and finding alternative transport routes is challenging. The report predicts a 1.5% economic growth for Ukraine this year, but warns of potential losses in agricultural and metal exports if the Black Sea blockade continues. Additionally, drought conditions are impacting energy production in Southeast Europe, further complicating the economic situation.
