The online trade of mummified human remains is growing, posing health risks beyond buyers, according to researchers. A study published in the International Journal of Cultural Property highlights a semi-clandestine market that has expanded with online platforms. Researchers analyzed 128 listings and found that many items, including heads and limbs, showed signs of biological deterioration. The study warns that dormant fungal spores can become airborne when remains are disturbed, posing risks to handlers and transport workers. The issue raises concerns about public health, as improper handling and transport can lead to exposure to harmful microorganisms.
