The Orthodox church in Avrig was built using a clever trick to bypass restrictions from the Viennese court, leading to a local legend about hidden treasures. The church, dedicated to 'Floriilor', stands proudly against the Făgăraș Mountains. Over 250 years ago, locals constructed the brick church despite prohibitions against Orthodox churches. They cleverly claimed to only build a stone foundation, while secretly erecting brick walls around a wooden church. A fire conveniently destroyed the wooden structure, allowing them to complete the church. This act of defiance occurred before the 1781 Tolerance Edict, which allowed various religious communities to build places of worship. The community's resistance was noted by Empress Maria Theresa, who eventually granted them permission to use the church.
