The European Investment Bank has granted an additional one billion euros for the Princess Elisabeth Island project, raising total funding to 1.65 billion euros. This artificial island will connect offshore wind farms to Belgium's electrical grid, with initial connections expected by 2031. The project aims to support a wind capacity of up to 3.5 GW, enough to power millions of households. Despite controversies over costs, the island is set to become a key hub for renewable energy in the North Sea, facilitating electricity exchanges among European countries.
