Belgium has completed the foundation of the world's first artificial energy island in the North Sea, consisting of 23 massive concrete blocks. This project, named Princess Elisabeth Island, aims to collect energy from future offshore wind farms and distribute it to the mainland. The total cost has surged to approximately €7 billion due to rising equipment prices. The island will serve as a hub for high-voltage electricity distribution and is designed with environmental considerations, including habitats for marine life. The project is expected to be operational by 2030, coinciding with new offshore wind developments.
