Belgium is constructing the world's first artificial energy island in the North Sea, 45 kilometers offshore. The Princess Elisabeth Island will serve as an electric hub for offshore wind farms, collecting and transmitting energy to the mainland. The project, which involves 23 concrete blocks, is expected to be completed by 2031. A green credit line of 1 billion euros has been confirmed by the European Investment Bank for the project's second phase. The island will not be inhabited but will include a small port and a heliport for maintenance teams. Environmental considerations are integrated into the design to protect marine life.
