Experts are developing a canine DNA database to assist police investigations, potentially providing crucial evidence in criminal cases. Although canine biological materials are often found at crime scenes, they are not always thoroughly analyzed. The project, led by Professor Denise Syndercombe Court, aims to identify dog DNA linked to crimes, which could help solve human cases lacking other evidence. The database covers 80 dog breeds and allows for the analysis of DNA samples found at crime scenes. This method could identify the breed of an unknown dog involved in a crime. Additionally, mitochondrial DNA sequencing is being used for cases with limited biological material. Previous investigations have already benefited from canine DNA analysis, providing insights into various incidents.
