A Syrian court sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher to death in absentia for crimes against humanity and war crimes. The ruling marks the first convictions against Assad and his inner circle since the family's decades-long rule. The court also sentenced Atef Najib, a relative, for his role in suppressing protests in Daraa, which sparked the civil war. Assad and Maher are currently in Russia, where they have sought political asylum, while Syrian authorities have requested their extradition.
