Scientists in South Africa are investigating the mass mortality of sardines along the southwestern coast, potentially linked to a herpesvirus. The Department of Environment has confirmed the presence of the sardine herpesvirus (PHV) for the first time in local waters. Preliminary findings show high levels of PHV in dead sardines, while live ones exhibit variable levels. Other factors like harmful algae and low oxygen conditions are also being examined. The situation has impacted operations at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, which had to reduce energy production due to the dead fish blocking a seawater intake.
