Babes-Bolyai University contributes to study on European high-mountain plant extinction rates

A recent study reveals that while the number of plant species on Europe's mountain summits is rising, local extinctions, especially among cold-adapted species, are increasing. The research, involving a European team including Prof. Mihai Puscas, analyzed data from 896 vegetation plots across 16 regions. Climate change is allowing lower-elevation plants to invade higher altitudes, leading to a decline in alpine species. This trend is particularly evident in areas experiencing significant warming. The findings emphasize the need for long-term monitoring to understand these biodiversity shifts better. UBB's Rector highlighted the importance of such research for the university's reputation.
